The Objective Engineer

The Need For Objectivity
Objective is defined (of a person or their judgement) as: “not being influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.”
Most people consider themselves to be objective in their judgements. In Engineering the truth is, quite simply, always the truth. One usually finds out the truth in Engineering (especially at the verification phase).
This truth can often be delivered with a certain bitterness that leads those reflective engineers to consider: “Did we truly do enough to suppress our own biases earlier on in the lifecycle? Or did we make poor judgements because we unfairly favoured certain facts that at that time, were convenient to favour?”
In this presentation, we will review several cases highlighting the need for a greater emphasis on this quality that is crucial to successful engineering teams.
