Design Thinking and Lean Innovation

Design Thinking can excellently be combined with Systems Engineering.

Design Thinking is often defined as an intuitive and human-centred problem-solving cycle. Design Thinking is both a methodology and a way of thinking. It promotes problem-solving through rapid iterations and experiments. The experiments, which are often conducted with simple prototypes, allow for rapid learning. This leads to earlier success. The motto is “fail often to succeed sooner”. In short iterations, the solution is tested with the customer, discarded or adapted and further developed until the needs of the customers/users are met (desirability), the solution is feasible and economical.

The concept of Design Thinking was developed in the late 1980s by Terry Winograd, Larry Leifer and David Kelley at Stanford University. The concept is marketed via the design and innovation agency IDEO, the or the HPI in Potsdam and Stanford’s global university network.

In this webinar, you will understand what Design Thinking is and get an idea of how to combine Systems Engineering with Design Thinking and Lean Start-up in the upfront Innovation phase (Pre-Development-Phase).

In this webinar, we will discuss:

Understand what Design Thinking is

Understand the Design Thinking Core Elements and Design Thinking Process

How Design Thinking and Systems Thinking can be combined

Which tools exist and use some of the tools, e.g. Lean Canvas

Answer your questions about Design Thinking and other agile approaches

Dr. Patrick Link has been Professor of Product Innovation at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in the Institute of Innovation and Technology Management (IIT) since 2009, co-founder of Trihow and an internationally recognised Design Thinking expert. He is the publisher of the two international bestsellers “The Design Thinking Playbook” and “The Design Thinking Toolbook“.

He studied mechanical engineering and holds a phD from the ETH Zurich. He promoted at the Betriebswissenschaftliches Institute (BWI) and learnt Systems Engineering there. After more than 12 years in industry, eight of them at Siemens, he now lectures on product management, Lean Startup and Design Thinking at various universities. At HSLU he set up the start-up support program “Smart-up” and the CAS Design Thinking.

He is intensively involved in the further development of agile approaches, new methods and tools as well as hybrid forms of work in the New Work.
